Flickering iPad Screen: Motion, Brightness, Force Quit

There are a few screen issues that may arise when using tablets like the iPad, and one of these is the presence of flickering on the screen. The screen will flicker on and off with use in some cases, causing interruptions to basic operations -- luckily, this is an issue that, in many cases, can be remedied without much trouble.

Adjust Motion and Transparency Features

In many cases, iPad screen flickering can be fixed by changing your background and contrast settings. Head to your Settings and find the Accessibility section under General, then look for "Increase Contrast" -- this will allow you to reduce the transparency and increase the contrast of your screen, which may help to fix any flickering issues. Additionally, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion and toggle this setting on -- this can also help to reduce screen flickering in some cases by reducing the amount of background movement on your device.

Turn Off Auto-Brightness

Not just iPads, but also iPad minis and various other tablets all come with an auto-brightness setting, which adjusts the brightness of your screen automatically depending on the lighting around you. This setting can sometimes be the root of flickering issues as it tries to adjust to different lighting conditions, so try disabling this feature and see if that helps to fix things.

You'll find this setting by going to Settings > Accessibility > Display Accommodations, at which point you can disable "Auto-Brightness."

Force Quit Applications

If neither of the above solutions work, you may need to take more drastic measures. One thing you can try is force quitting any applications that you're not using -- this can help to free up some memory and resources on your device which may be causing the flickering.

To do this, press and hold the Power button until you see the "slide to power off" prompt appear on your screen. Once this appears, press and hold the Home button until the screen goes blank -- this will close out all open applications. If flickering decreases or stops altogether after taking this measure, you may just need to uninstall some apps or otherwise free up some space on your device.
